Solar Hot Water System
How they work?
Solar hot water heaters combine a tank, collectors and booster, connected as a system whose primary means of heating water is gained from sunlight. Water is heated in the collectors by absorbing the sun's energy. When hot, the water is returned to the tank and stored until it is used. The heating cycle continues until all the water in the tank is hot, or until there is no sunlight.
Things to consider when selecting a solar hot water heater
Purchase/Installation costs
The additional components found in a solar water heater are both more expensive to buy and require additional labour to install, however running costs and both state and federal government incentives ensure these costs are more than paid back over the life of the unit.
Heat pumps that do not have solar panels are cheaper to install but are marginally less efficient than solar systems.
Running Costs
Solar water heaters have the lowest running costs of any water heaters as they use the sun's energy to heat the water.
Capacity
Solar water heaters are available in a range of tank capacities and tank mounting positions. The larger the tank, the more solar heated water that can be stored.
Remember to consider both the space you have available for your installation and your budget.
Solar hot water systems come with either electric or gas boosters to ensure you have sufficient hot water all year round.
The Environment
Powered by renewable energy, solar water heaters reduce energy consumption. This displaces the need to produce electricity, and the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from it's production, indirectly benefiting the environment.
