Why is the government offering rebates for some hot water systems?

Water heating via a standard electric hot water heater is the largest single source of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the average Australian home. In fact, it accounts for almost 30% per cent of home energy use. The Australian government is helping Australian households install environmentally friendly hot water systems. Rebates are available to eligible households.

State Rebate: $300

  • $300 for replacement of an electric storage hot water system with 5 star or higher energy rating.
  • $300 for replacement of an electric storage hot water system with a heat pump or solar hot water system with 20 or more renewable energy certificates.

This rebate is in addition to the federal rebate.

Federal Rebate: $1000 to $600

The federal government provides a further rebate of $1000 to $600 for the installation of solar or heat pump hot water systems to replace existing electric storage systems in existing eligible homes. The rebate is offered for eligible systems installed on, or after February 3, 2009 until March 2012. The intention is to pay correctly received applicants within 60 days.
